- In 2000, First Unitarian Church of Des Moines made an intentional decision to grow out of a 30-year membership plateau. Eight years later, the membership had grown from 250 to 400, and the congregation was recognized as a Breakthrough Congregation at GA 2009. Their story is on the UUA Web site
