Judy Lecture: The Toll War Takes on All Who Are Called to Serve
9:30 to 10:45 AM
Now that the lecture has completed, you can watch a recording.
The Arthur M. Judy Memorial Lecture will be presented by Thomas Weiner.
Thomas Weiner
Thomas Weiner, a UU from Massachusetts, is the author of CALLED TO SERVE: Stories of the Men and Women Confronted by the Vietnam War Draft, (published May 2011). Tom was drafted and called for a physical in May of 1971. With unflinching honesty, he tells how he prepared to beat the draft and the painful discoveries he wasn’t prepared for. The 30 stories in the book include those of men who served, resisted, left, or chose conscientious objection, and how those choices impacted the rest of their lives. He also interviewed people who loved, counseled or supported these young men, showing ultimately how war affects us all.
Tom has taught at the Smith College Campus School in Northampton, MA, a laboratory and teacher training elementary school, for 35 years. He is a social justice activist who addresses issues of fairness and access in his work, his community, and his local Unitarian Society.
For more information about his book, Tom has set up a blog. In an effort to promote long overdue healing from the after-effects of the Vietnam War, space is included for people to add their own narratives: http://www.vietnamwardraftstories.com/blog/.
