Board Members, 2009–10

Kathy Burek President: Kathy Burek

During her 30-year membership at Michael Servetus Unitarian Society (Fridley, MN), Kathy Burek has served on its Board of Trustees, as its President, and in a variety of lay leadership roles. She has served as Vice President of the PSD Board since January 2008. In that capacity, she has worked on PSD Governance and strategic planning. She also chaired the Program Council from January 2008-August 2009. Kathy has assisted District Staff in developing a strategic plan for growth for the district. In addition to her PSD work, Kathy serves on the Board of Trustees for the UUA Health Plan, and was its chair from March 2007-December 2008. Professionally, Kathy is an independent consultant and facilitator, focusing on strategic planning and organizational design. She is married and has three adult children.

Joanne Roudebush Vice President: Joanne Roudebush

Joanne Burns Roudebush has been an active member of the UU Fellowship of Topeka for 19 years. She has served on the Board of Directors three times as general trustee, President-elect/President, and as Treasurer. She has served as chairperson of the following committees: Religious Education, Membership, Finance, Pledge, Nominating, and Endowment/Investment. Joanne co-led two years of president training for the southern PSD Leadership Conferences in Omaha and Shawnee Mission. She served on the PSD Volunteer Recruitment Committee 2006-08. Prairie Star District honored her as the Unsung Unitarian Universalist recipient in 2005. She is a board certified veterinary radiologist and has her own consulting practice. She and her husband, Philip, are empty nesters with two twenty-something children.

Bill Elwood Treasurer: Bill Elwood

Bill Elwood has been a member of First Universalist Church, Minneapolis for twenty-six years, and UU churches in Oklahoma and Texas for six years. He has served on the Policy Governance, Personnel, Ministerial Transition, and Finance Committees, and as Board of Trustees Treasurer, Vice President, and President at First Universalist. He also has served on the UUA President’s Roundtable Planning Committee, and the Prairie Star District Audit Committee for three years. Bill, now retired, has an MBA and over thirty years experience in management of corporate information systems. He is married with three children and five grandchildren, and his interests include biking, hiking and travel.

Dave Martin has been a member of the UU Society of Iowa City for over 30 years. During that time he has served in a variety of leadership roles, including Board Trustee, Treasurer, and Board President. He has taught OWL (Our Whole Lives - sexuality education) classes and been chair of the Stewardship Campaign. He served on the PSD Program Council and has been on the staff of the Midwest Leadership School. He is head of the Business Library at the University of Iowa.

Tom Capo Director: Rev. Tom Capo

Reverend Tom Capo has served as minister to Peoples Church Unitarian Universalist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa since September 2008. Prior to serving Peoples Church, he served two other congregations. He has been a practicing psychotherapist for the past thirty years. He has served as a Consultant for the Southwest Unitarian Universalist Conference, been on staff a number of times at the Southwest Unitarian Universalist Summer Institute, and been on the Aspire Board for Unitarian Universalist divinity students. Prior to following the call to ministry, he served on church boards, worked with children and youth RE programs, and chaired a number of church committees including Worship Committee and Search Committee. He lives in Cedar Rapids with his wife, Martha, while his two sons are in college back in Texas.

Heather Coffman Director: Heather Coffman

Heather Coffman has been a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, Kansas since 2006. She has served on several committees there, including the Spiritual Celebration team for three years - two years as chair. She is in her first year on her congregation’s Board of Directors. Professionally, she is the Information Technology Customer Service Manager for the University of Kansas.

Fred Hulting has been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka for the past 12 years. During that time, Fred has filled a variety of leadership roles, including Board Trustee and Board President. He also enjoys teaching RE classes, and is currently the Finance Chair at UUCM. Fred works for General Mills as a Director in the Research and Development organization.

Kristi Schuck Director: Kristi Schuck

Kristi Schuck is the Director of Lifespan Faith Development at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Mankato, Minnesota. She has been in her current position since 2007. She serves on many of the committees within the fellowship – fund raising, social action, Sunday Services, as well as in her community at large. She was recently elected to serve the Mankato Area School Board, is Chair of the Planning Commission for the City of Mankato, and sits on a number of other non-profit boards.

Libby Starling Director: Libby Starling

Libby Starling joined the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis in fall 1992. At FUS, she served on the Search Committee and on the Board of Trustees for five years, including as vice-chair and chair. Libby is currently a member of the UUA’s Midwest Regional Subcommittee on Candidacy. Professionally, Libby is the Research Manager for the Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities.

John Blevins UUA Trustee: John Blevins

John and his wife Sharon have been active members of All Souls UU Church in Kansas City since 1968, when they were seeking a church in which to raise their two daughters. John served as president of the congregation and has chaired many committees, including ministerial searches, endowment, religious education, building renovation, nominating, and long range planning. He has served on the Prairie Star District Board of Directors since his election as secretary in 2000. He served three years on the volunteer staff of Mid-West Leadership School in Beloit, WI and four years on the board of the UUA-affiliated Mountain Retreat and Learning Centers in North Carolina. John has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. The majority of John’s professional career was in the information technology arena at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. His energies today are focused on transforming organizational governance, strengthening congregations through regional clustering, and interfaith justice work. He keeps his life balanced with daily walks, reading, music and theater, and playing with his three grandchildren.
