Topics To Be Discussed

This workshop will help organize and motivate congregational activities on social justice themes.

Attendees will be provided with a usable tool (the just released Social Justice Handbook) to take back to their congregations to help them assess and implement a social justice action or program.

Workshop will include the following:

• Social Justice and Unitarian Universalism
• Approaches to Social Justice
• Characteristics of UU congregations involved in successful social change ministry
• Structuring Social Justice into the life of a congregation
• Motivating people to do social justice
• Preparing an action plan

Who should attend

The workshop welcomes social justice chairs, members of social justice committees and anyone interested in UU congregational social justice activities.

This workshop is held immediately prior to the PSD Annual Conference, during the day Friday before the conference begins (also in Iowa City).

1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Costs

• $10 per person includes registration and materials, snack and equal exchange coffee.
• Separate registrations for this workshop and the Annual Conference are necessary if you wish to attend both. This workshop is not included in your Annual Conference registration.
• Participants are responsible for their own housing arrangements. Information on nearby motels will be sent on request.

Workshop Leader

Art McDonald

The Rev. Art McDonald is the minister of the First Universalist Church of Essex MA. He also served the Allegheny UU Church in Pittsburgh PA for many years. Rev. McDonald’s ministry has included significant involvement with and faithbased community organizing and advocacy. He has been facilitating UUA social justice empowerment workshops since the program’s beginning in 1992.
