Staffing for Growth workshop for 5 mid-sized Iowa congregations

10:00 : Welcome, Chalice Lighting (Nancy Haley)

10:05 - 10:15 : Kinds of growth (Nancy Heege)

10:15 - 10:20 : Introduction to Barriers to Growth Exercise (Laura Schlatter)

10:20 - 10:40 : In mixed groups, with instructions on 3x5 cards, discuss barriers to growth in our congregations. Note themes on newsprint. Two rounds of conversation -- one are the obvious barriers; the second round would be not-so-obvious barriers

10:40 - 10:55 : Group sharing of barriers (Laura)

10:55 - 11:10 : Break

11:15 - 12:15 : Keynote Address (Stefan Jonasson)

12:15 - 1 p.m. : Lunch

1:00 - 1:15 : Insights from McIntosh book Staffing for Growth (Laura)

1:15 - 1:30 : Highlight several midsize congregations and how they’re meeting their challenges through staffing increases (Nancy Heege)

This would include White Bear UU Church, which has hired a Business Administrator; First Church in Rochester MN, which has hired a person to do Pastoral Care and some membership; and All Souls in Kansas City, which has hired a person to do Membership.

1:30 - 2:15 : Break into congregational groups. Topic: “As we address growth and staffing issues in our congregation, what area should we be focusing on? What might we want to recommend to our Board?”

2:15 - 2:45 : Report back to larger group (Laura)

2:45 - 3:00 : Break

3:00 - 3:30 : Resources -- Ask each group to name 1 - 2 “best practices” from their congregation. Share information on UUA’s Uncommon Denomination resources and also PSD resources available. (Nancy Heege)

3:30 - 3:55 : A “What next?” conversation for this group of congregations (Nancy Heege)

3:55 - 4:00 : Closing
