Leadership Conference 2009

Online Workshops

New this year, the Fall Leadership Conference will be online rather than in-person and will include participants from three districts.

Three sessions on one day:

  • Session 1: 9:00 – 10:30 AM (Central Time)
  • Session 2: 11:00 – 12:30 PM (Central Time)
  • Session 3: 1:00 – 2:30 PM (Central Time)

Two workshops will be offered each session. Participants may choose one workshop per session.

Workshop topics

Yes You Can - 10 Tips for a Successful Presidency
Offered during Session 3: 1:00 PM (Central Time)
This workshop offers ten ideas for making your year as president of your congregation a successful one. Join us as the presenters discuss lessons they learned during their terms as the elected leaders of their congregations.
Co-Presenters: David Jackoway, recent president of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, and Gary Jackoway, recent president of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark, Delaware
Engaging New Members in the Life of the Church
Offered during Session 2: 11:00 AM (Central Time)
The membership journey doesn’t end when they sign the book. Join us for a workshop about how we can help new members find their way into full participation in the life of the congregation.
Presenter: Lori Emison Clair served as Membership Coordinator for First Unitarian Church of Des Moines, Iowa [a 2009 Breakthrough Congregation] for 6 years and, beginning in July, will take on additional responsibilities at the church as Director of Congregational Life. Her work has helped the congregation grow by 45 members (that’s a 13% increase) in the past three years.
Information For New DREs
Offered during Session 2: 11:00 AM (Central Time)
This workshop will help new DREs get started in their jobs. Special attention will be paid to helping new religious educators connect with the resources they need in order to succeed.
Presenter: For over a decade Janet Hanson has been the director of religious education at the White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church in Mahtomedi, Minnesota (a Breakthrough Congregation in 2005). During Janet’s tenure the religious education program there has grown tremendously. A longtime member of LREDA (Liberal Religious Educators Association), she offers a wealth of experience to this workshop.
Finance For New Treasurers
Offered during Session 1: 9:00 AM (Central Time)
Review of basic accounting equation, explanation of balance sheets and how they change from one period to the next through operations. Review of the operations statement. Introduction to cash flow and cash flow forecasts. Why budgets are never right.
Presenter: Louis Sims, Vice President Finance/Treasurer, Heartland Board of Trustees, UU Fellowship of Yellow Springs
Volunteer Management and Recruitment
Offered during Session 3: 1:00 PM (Central Time)
A top need of most congregations is to find more volunteers, to use volunteers more effectively and to make volunteering better experience. This workshop will share some basics on the best practices on this subject.
Presenter: Shirley Lundin is a consultant to congregations and other non-profits on working with volunteers. She was a national consultant for the Girls Scouts of the USA; Coordinator of Volunteer Resources for Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust as well as coordinator, instructor and program developer for the Harper College Volunteer Management (now NPO management) certificate program.
Running Effective Meetings
Offered during Session 1: 9:00 AM (Central Time)
From basic how-to tips to more advanced leadership techniques, including the importance of role clarification, this workshop will focus on successful facilitation for congregation leaders who wish to accomplish goals and have fun doing it!
Presenter: Patricia D'Auria has served as a consultant in the Central Midwest District since 2007. She is a member of UU Church West in Brookfield, WI, where she coordinates the Small Group Ministry Program, and has served in a variety of other leadership roles. Professionally, she is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with individuals, couples and families.

General Information

  • Workshops will be 90 minutes long, with a presentation and time for discussion.
  • Participants will need a computer with high speed Internet access and a separate phone line.
  • Individuals can participate from their home or office. Small groups could gather at their church with a large screen and speaker phone.
  • The workshop Web site address and call-in phone number will be emailed to those registered 24 hours before the workshop.
  • A tutorial on how to participate in an online workshop is available. It is a slideshow, less than five minutes long, which explains what to expect and how to use the workshop software.

Registration

Registration is being handled by the Heartland District of the UUA. Click on the “Register now” link. Look for “Midwest UU Leadership” on the Heartland District page, complete the Leadership Conference Registration form and submit online, then pay using the link on the Heartland page. Register now.

  • There is a limit to the number of people who can register.
  • Registration is required by 4:00 PM on Thursday, September 17, 2009.
  • The registration fee is $10 for each computer connection for each session. Participants will NOT incur long distance charges on their phone bill for the phone call.
