Annual Conference 2011 Archive

Most Youth (Grades 7 through 12) will participate in the Annual Conference by attending  Def Con 3 Youth Conference which will have some activities for youth and their adult sponsors only at First Unitarian Church and some activities at the hotel in common with the Annual Conference. For registration information see Def Con 3.

Activities

Friday

On Friday youth and sponsors will gather at the hotel for the Opening Celebration and then move to the church for Worship, Free Time, and to spend the night.

Saturday

On Saturday, youth will have breakfast at the church, attend a youth workshop with a speaker related to a service project, move to a community site to work on a service project, and have lunch at the site. Youth will return to the hotel to particpate in Workshop C and stay for dinner, entertainment and to lead the evening worship. Youth will then go back to the church for a coffee house and to spend the night.

Sunday

After breakfast at the church on Sunday, youth will move to the hotel for the closing worship service.

Adult Sponsors

Youth participating in Def Con 3 are required to have an adult sponsor who is also attending Def Con 3.

  • Each adult can sponsor no more than seven youth.
  • Adult sponsors must particpate in all Def Con 3 activities including sleeping at the church.
  • Adult sponsors will provide transporation for youth between the church and hotel and service project site.

Photo Release

By registering a youth for the Def Con 3 or the Annual Conference, you are agreeing to allow the youth to be photographed. Videos and photos may be used on our web site and in District print publications. If you have serious concerns about your child's picture being used, please contact Barb Royal at royalbl [at] mac [dot] com prior to the conference. You will need to let us know some way to identify the youth (perhaps a distinctive shirt or hat) during the conference so that we will know not to use any pictures of that person.

Alternative Way to Attend Annual Conference

If a youth (grade 7 to 12) wishes to attend the Annual Conference but not Def Con 3 (that is spend the whole weekend at the hotel and participate in all the Annual Conference speakers, meals, and workshops), the youth may register on the adult form at the young adult rate.

  • Annual Conference registration includes meals but does not include accomodations.
  • Early registration rate is $75 per youth (on or before March 18)
  • Full registration rate is $100 per youth (after March 18)
  • It will be necessary to submit a parental permission form and designate an adult sponsor (such as a parent or friend from your congregation) who is also attending the conference. Because the signatures on the permission form need to be original signatures, you’ll need to print out the form, have it signed  by both youth and parents, and then mail it to the address on the form so it is received in Des Moines by April 1, 2011.
