Miracles Do Happen!

After 13 years of dreaming and three years of serious planning, the Unitarian Universalist Society of River Falls, WI, moved into a new home this summer, but not the one they were expecting.

A few days before contracting with a builder for an addition to their small building, they were approached by another church interested in selling a church building and property.

Inside the new River Falls building Within three days, they looked, they made an offer, and they began the journey to a larger and more visible facility with space to grow in, a parking lot, and five acres of land. Over the summer, minor indoor renovations were begun and services have already filled their new home with music and laughter.

There will be a Building Dedication and Open House on November 6.

UU.Con: Giving Life the Shape of Justice

Plan to have an enlightening spring! Attend the PSD Annual Conference, UU.Con: Giving Life the Shape of Justice, on April 28–30, 2006, in the heart of downtown Iowa City, Iowa — a city the UTNE Review named one of the ten most enlightened communities in the U.S.

The Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City (UUSIC) will be your host. At the Conference, participants can come together with UUs from an eight-state area to share in a wide range of activities whose focus will be justice, fellowship, learning, and growth. Our opening speaker will be Johanna Chao Rittenburg, Program Manager for Economic Justice of the UU Service Committee. The Rev. Valerie Mapstone Ackerman, of Red Dog Farm and Retreat Center near Tulsa, Oklahoma, will give the Judy Lecture on Saturday morning and lead a workshop that afternoon.

During your stay, you are invited to explore the attractions that earn Iowa City its reputation for enlightenment! A sampling of those within easy walking distance of the Sheraton include:

  • UUSIC’s unique home building, erected in 1908, and a rarity because it follows original AUA church design and is still occupied by its original denomination.
  • A tantalizing array of restaurants, art galleries and art stores, book, antique, and import shops.
  • The adjacent University of Iowa campus, home to intriguing museums of art, medicine, and natural history, and architectural marvels like award-winning Carver Hawkeye Arena.
  • The gently wooded shores of the Iowa River, where you can stroll, relax, and feed a flock of friendly ducks — a truly delightful April experience.

Watch for registration materials this spring; early registration discounts will again be offered. To learn more, visit www.psduua.org/conf.
