Make Cards at Home to Trade at Roots and Wings!

The Davenport UU Congregation invites you to schedule Artist Trading Card workshops in your own church before the Annual Conference so you can bring cards to trade. Children and adults alike in the Davenport church have had a great time making ATCs.

We will also have a “Make-It/Take-It” table set up at the conference, complete with art supplies, so participants can make and trade cards at the event; but ideally you will bring completed cards with you to trade.

Trading the cards is not limited to PSD events and we hope this movement catches on and Unitarians trade cards at other events and even in their own congregations. ATCs are great for all ages!

What Are They?

Artist Trading Cards or ATCs are miniature works of art created on 2 ½ × 3 ½ inch card stock. (See photos below.)

  • They are originals, small editions, and, most importantly, self-produced.
  • Anybody can create Artist Trading Cards, and they are great for all ages.
  • The idea is that you trade them with other people who produce cards, either at trading sessions or wherever you meet another ATC trader in person.
  • It’s not about money: participants in trading sessions should not be charged any money. The point of the project is the exchange of cards as well as personal experience.
  • Zurich artist M. Vänçi Stirnemann initiated this project in 1997.
  • Since then several hundred people from all over the world have traded ATCs through mail or at events.

Can Anyone Make an ATC?

Yes, Artist Trading Cards can be whatever you want them to be: poems, music, mixed media collages, drawings, doodles, photo collages, etc.

You can create original art, tear and alter images from magazines, use your favorite quote, stamps or stencils; only your imagination limits you.

We are encouraging participants to work with our theme, “Roots and Wings,” but you should feel free to create a card that is meaningful to you or represents your own creativity.

Trading cards can be made using an old deck of cards or cut from card stock.

Pre-cut cards and other supplies are available through Oriental Trading Company and craft stores.

There are also books on the subject available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and most bookstores.

The rules for ATCs are simple:

  • ATCs must measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches (64 X 89 mm).
  • ATCs must be traded for other cards — not sold.
  • ATCs must be flat enough to fit into a plastic trading card sleeve.
  • ATCs must be signed and dated on the back of the card.
